NZ: SPCA urges consumers of pork to only buy free range

Mon, 18 May 2009 5:53p.m.

The SPCA is urging pork consumers to look for SPCA-approved logos and buy free range only.

The call came after TVNZ’s Sunday programme aired footage by Open Rescue, who were accompanied by comedian Mike King during a break-in at a North Island intensive pig farm.

King, a long-standing front man for a campaign advertising pork, said he was deeply ashamed of his role in promoting that type of farming.

Factory farming might prove a risk too far:

I hope they go ahead with making the changes to labelling. The only free range pork product in my supermarket is a free range ham that I buy.

However I am still disappointed with the amount of people still buying barn eggs, when it’s common knowledge how these chickens are treated. I hope people do vote with their feet because that is the only way to bring around a change.

    Hi Lorraine.

I only just started buying bacon again after a 5 or so year absence from it for various reasons. I started buying it again when i noticed the freerange bacon by Freedom Farms that is in most supermarkets. I concur, we all need to vote with our feet (wallets) and that way the message would get thru quite quickly indeed.

    Good article Kiwi.

Typical government trick to try and blame the farmers for compling with the policy that THEY created.

Good to see you on Clare’s site Barron 🙂

    Thanks Lorraine.

Now that the issue has gained far more public attention, it will be interesting to see how the government responds.
