How To Spot A Disinformation Agent

By Clare Swinney

Information warfare is being waged throughout the cybersphere.  Whether they are  CENTCOM disinfo government employees or ill-informed know-it-alls, there has been an ugly battle raging on the Internet for the minds of the public.   As any 9/11 truth activist who uses the web imagesregularly can tell you, truth obfuscaters are crawling around message boards like locusts referring to 9/11 truthers as “fringe nutcases,” “ridiculous,” “…fucking conspiracy theorists” and the like, while simultaneously hijacking rational discussions  by planting bogus information.  And no, the film September Clues, which is based on the psychotic idea that there were no planes used in the attacks on 9/11, is not based on valid information, and  jet fuel fires can not melt steel.

Naturally, it is not just information about what really happened on 9/11 that is under attack, the infowar is evident in relation to other topics that governments  have a vested interest in lying about, such as chemtrails, mercury in vaccines leading to autism, AIDS/HIV being man-made, “man-made  global warming” and the health effects of fluoride and depleted uranium (DU).

The disinfo artists who work on the Internet, referred to as “trolls,”  use a number of tried and tested means to mislead those who are trying to learn the truth about controversial issues, while attempting to make those disseminating the truth feel reluctant to continue.  Twenty-Five Ways To Suppress The Truth -The Rules of Disinformation by H. Micheal Sweeney covers their methods in some detail.

Their dirty work does have some positive spin-offs for those who care about the truth however.   For one thing, if they argue incessantly about a particular topic, such as that it is safe to administer the neurotoxin mercury in vaccines, they are waving a flag and telling you indirectly that this is an issue you should be particularly concerned about.  And secondly, when they quarrel about a little-known area, they are often helping those they engage with gain more knowledge.  Not because of the misleading information they post, but because arguing with them can lead people to do far more research than they would have done otherwise.

The following is taken from a speech by Nicky Hager:
We live in an era where the public spaces are being crowded with paid spokespeople, spin and trickery; where news and political discussion are being polluted by the glib outpourings of ever growing numbers of PR people; and where the public spaces available for real democratic activity are drying up.

More and more paid manufacturing of news, more and more paid voices in so-called public discussion, increasing sophistication of manipulation, more media management, more fake community groups, more scripting of politicians by unseen advisers and so on.

Today there are PR units in every government agency, Ministers offices, local government, universities, crown research institutes, state-owned enterprises and so on.

There has been even greater growth in the private sphere.

Private PR firms began to appear in the1970s and 1980s but since then there has been exponential growth.

In Wellington, for example, there are now about 50 PR companies involved with 100s of clients and campaigns. On top of them there are numerous PR contractors, in-house PR people in large companies, specialised lobbying companies, numerous industry lobby organisations, law firms that offer PR and lobby services and a wide industry of support services that further enhance the advantage to those with the money to pay.

ShapeNZ, which runs “surveys” strikes me as being one of this nature. It has started with an agenda and is putting information on its website to support the direction the people who run it want the country to go in. Here is an example: http://www.nzbcsd.org.nz/story.asp?StoryID=974
NEW ZEALANDERS STRONGLY BELIEVE CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL, WANT FASTER ACTION

    23 Mar 2009
A new national survey of New Zealanders’ attitudes to climate change deals a major blow to those who argue it is not happening.”

Now, if you have a look on the New Zealand Centre for Political Research site, http://www.nzcpr.com at their polls you will see that the vast majority do not believe in the threat of climate change. The mere fact that the IPCC is acting as a disinfo agent itself and manufacturing data, as the article below reveals, should tell people that it is a hoax. Refer:
